In this module I developed a MATLAB script to locate and size cracks along a simulated weld face (provided by the professor). This involved selecting the optimum ultrasonic array configuration, filtering the noisy signal, optimising the code performance through MATLAB vectorisation and automatically sizing the cracks using the MATLAB image processing toolbox. I also compared the performance of the Total Focus Method (TFM) and Phase Coherent Imaging (PCI), showing that PCI can effectively reduce background noise, albeit with a significant increase in computation time.

In the second half of the assignment I performed a structural integrity analysis on a nuclear feedwater pipe suffering an emergency shutdown. This involved using a failure assessment diagram to calculate the risk of failure based on the combined interation between tensile loading and stress intensity.
